RCMSPL Season Wrap-Up

And so it ends …

Wednesday night saw the final games to be played in the RCMSPL season this year, with 3 of the 4 divisions playing the deciding games in their Finals Series’. It was a pretty exciting playoffs all around, but no division provided more excitement than the Masters 45 Division.

Masters 45

The top 2 teams in the division eventually made their way to the Finals, but not without some bumps along the road.

Rangers took the division title for the regular season, then promptly lost game 1 of the Semis to the Play-in winner – Royal City Garage Doors. Royal City Garage Doors came up empty after their shining moment in game 1, with Rangers taking the next 2 games quite handily to make their way to the Finals.

Barzotti won the 1st game in their Semi-Finals against Generals, but then lost game 2 and barely eeked out the win in the deciding game to make their way to the Finals.

In the Division Finals, Barzotti quickly jumped out to a 2 game lead but Rangers took games 3 and 4 (by 1 run each time!) setting up game 5 on Wednesday night. The Rangers couldn’t complete the comeback on this night, and Barzotti walked away with the upset victory.

Division III

Lyon Financial got a bye into the Semis for winning the Division title while IC Tile & Stone took the more traditional route – but both ended up sweeping their Semi-Finals Series’ to make their way to the Finals.

Lyon Financial took an early 2 game lead in the best-of-5 series, but IC Tile & Stone bounced back with a victory in game 3. That proved to be as far as they would go, with Lyons coming out strong in game 4 and taking the series 3 games to 1.

Division II

After an 18-3 Regular Season, Sharks promptly lost game 1 of the Quarter Finals to the last place Swamp Donkeys. They turned things around and won their next 2 games to take that series and then never looked back! They swept Here 2 There Freight in the Semi-Finals to advance to the Finals against More Cowbell.

More Cowbell swept their opening round against Pour House before coming up against DDG in the Semis. A 2-run victory and 1-run loss later, More Cowbell came out strong with a decisive victory in game 3 to advance to the Finals.

Sharks swept the season series against More Cowbell and then proved that wasn’t a fluke by sweeping them in the Finals.

Division I

This division was dominated by Friar Tucks in the Regular Season, and it continued to be dominated by Friar Tucks in the Playoffs. They started with a sweep of Havana Blast in the Quarter-Finals and continued with a sweep of Guelph Brewers to make their way to the Finals.

Thunder had their own brooms out, sweeping their way through Misfits and Full Throttle to find their way into the Finals. That would prove to be as far as they would go.

Friar Tucks took game 1 of the Finals with a decisive 21-9 victory, then managed the sweep with a couple of very close games.

Congratulations to all the winners this season and through these playoffs – and congratulations everyone on another successful season!

President’s Reminder

It has been an interesting year to say the least for the RCMSPL. There have been some compliments and some complaints about the rules and the way things were handled this year.

As with any league, year after year there are specific “growing pains” and always something that could have been done differently. In order to have your voices brought off the diamonds and out of the shadows and to make your league a better league, you need to attend the ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. This is the only time and place that voices get heard, rules get changed and our league becomes a better place to play for everyone involved.

With that being said, the AGM has been set for:
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17TH, 2010
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS – 84 LEWIS ROAD, GUELPH

At this meeting, we will discuss any and all constitutional proposals and elect the executive for the 2011 season. If you would like to submit a constitutional proposal or become involved in the executive, this is the meeting that you have to be at !!!

Changes to the Constitution will only be considered at the Annual General Meeting. This means that any and all constitutional proposals MUST BE RECEIVED by me no later then November 3rd, 2010 to be included in the AGM and to be in effect for the 2011 playing season.

Playoff Finals Now ON!!

The RCMSPL season is quickly coming to a close, and some of our best ball is now on display.

Division I

Friar Tuck’s and Thunder both managed a sweep of their opponents in the Semi-Final round to advance to the Finals, and their Championship Series started last night with a decisive 21-9 victory for Friar Tuck’s. Game 2 of this series is set to go Monday, with games Mondays and Wednesdays until a team takes 3 games for the series win.

Division II

Sharks have advanced to the Finals with a sweep of Here 2 There Freight – but they’ll have to sit out a night as their opponent has yet to be determined. More Cowbell and DDG are currently knotted at 1 game each in their best-of-3 Semi-Final round after 2 very tightly fought battles both decided in the final innings. The deciding game in this series goes Monday with the victor advancing to the Championship Series on Wednesday.

Division III

Lyon Financial obviously didn’t feel any adverse affects for sitting with their Bye in the first round of the playoffs – they managed to sweep Sandlot in the Semi-Finals. IC Tile & Stone also managed to sweep their way into the Finals, taking 2 straight from Reds. Their Championship Series start date has now been moved up to Monday, and they’ll do the Monday-Wednesday thing until a winner is decided.

Masters 45

The Semi-Final Series’ in this division made for some very interesting ball. Rangers lost their opening game to the underdog Royal City Garage Doors, only to bounce back and take the next 2 games in decisive fashion. Barzotti gave up the middle game to the Generals and barely eeked out game 3 with a 14-13 win to advance. In the Championship Series opener last night, Barzotti upset the Rangers 17-3 to take the early series lead. This one looks like it could prove interesting!

** Note: I’d like to remind all remaining teams to please get your scores in as quickly as possible so we can keep the City and the Umpires informed of where we stand.

Playoff Schedule Shuffle

Take note – the Master Playoff Schedule has some changes on it!

Edit: See the edits for each Division below for update information as of Tuesday the 31st!

The 1st week of our playoffs brought some surprising results, with a 7 (Guelph Brewers) knocking off a 2 (Black Sox) in Division I and a couple 5s (Here 2 There Freight in Division II and Reds in Division III) upsetting their 4th seeded opponents (LockNuts and Long Shots respectively). They will be moving on to the next round, but their opponents have yet to be decided – since we are using an NHL-type playoff structure, the original seeding will determine the seeding for the Semi-Final round.

As stated in the original posting regarding playoff schedules:

As in past years, if both sides of the next series have completed their series and there is an open time slot (i.e. where game 3 was scheduled), we will move their game up into that time slot.

The implementation of this becomes a little more difficult this year, given that we do not know the opponents for the Semi-Final round until all series in any division’s Quarter-Finals are completed. But we can plan for that eventuality.

Division I

Since 3 of the 4 Quarter-Final series’ will be completed on Monday the 30th, and since the 4th series could finish up on that same night, the Semi-Finals will begin on Wednesday, September 1st at 8:15 – but only if the Friar Tucks vs. Havana Blast series finishes on Monday! If Blast wins Monday night, the Semis will start on Monday the 6th as originally scheduled.

Edit: Friar Tucks took the series, so Semi-Finals will begin on Wednesday!

Division II

With 3 of the 4 Quarter-Finals series’ already in the books, and only 1 series left to be decided, we still won’t know until after Monday’s game between Sharks and Swamp Donkeys if there will be a 3rd game in this series. If the Sharks win on Monday and the series goes to the 3rd game on Wednesday, the Semi-Finals will start on the 6th as originally planned. Only if the Swamp Donkeys pull off the upset on Monday will the Semis start on Wednesday.

Edit: It looks like Sharks still want to play – Game 3 of this series is Wednesday, so the Semis start on the 6th as originally scheduled.

Division III

Lyon Financial (1st round bye) has been waiting to find out who they will play once their playoffs get started – and they may have to wait another week before they know! With the 2nd game of two of these series’ not scheduled until Monday, we won’t know until after that if we can advance the schedule at all. This will be determined by whether IC Tile & Stone can sweep Line Drive and whether the Sandlot vs. Master Batters series goes to game 3. If both series finish Monday night, the Semi-Finals will start on Wednesday – otherwise they won’t start until Monday the 6th as originally scheduled.

Edit: Sandlot and Master Batters will play Game 3 of their Quarter-Finals tonight, so the Semi-Finals will begin on Monday the 6th.

Masters 45

Finally – a series I don’t need to worry about rescheduling (yet!)! With the Play-in series done and the Semi-Final opponents all decided from the start (due to the number of teams in the division) the next round will begin on Wednesday as originally planned.

Reminder

As you’ve probably figured out from all the possibilities above, it is imperative that scores are reported in a timely fashion. Teams that are sitting wondering if/when/where they will play need as much time as possible to notify their players and make sure they can field a team. Please make sure your scores are reported ASAP – and I’ll do my part to post the results.

Thanks.
