Diamond Maintenance

Got this in my Inbox today so I’m passing it along to all players – it was submitted by a player looking to help everyone:

I was thinking that prior to the season starting, it might be prudent for both leagues to remind teams about some proper diamond maintenance. It would also be good for the new teams to know. I know last year there were a few times where we were digging for 15 minutes trying to find the base hole locations.

On setup:
Put base plugs by the fence where they can easily be found.
Chalk the lines.
Try to clear out any water.
On game completion:
Bring bases and magnets back to appropriate storage locations (diamond 7 equipment can be stored in the green box on 7).
Put plugs back in.
Turn off lights.
Lock up shed if you’re the last team to leave.

Also, it might be nice to have a contact number made available to everyone for the umpire-in-chief. If you recall, we had to supply our own ump in the playoffs last year because ours never showed up and we couldn’t get a volunteer. No one, including other umps, really knew who to contact or who was supposed to be scheduled.

Thanks,
Jeff Donkersgoed (Long Shots)

The Exec was at the diamonds on Sunday where we met a representative from the City of Guelph (yes, at 1:00pm on a Sunday), and we discussed the status of the diamonds and planned maintenance for this year. We also dug out ALL of the base holes and have placed caps in the holes – as we do every year prior to the season starting.

Please continue to replace the caps after every game in an effort to minimize the setup time for the next team.

If there is ever an issue with not being able to locate the base holes, please let a member of the exec know ASAP and we will have it located as soon as we can … we have it down to a science and can locate them fairly easily now.

The Umpire-in-Chief is Dwayne Scott and can be reached via e-mail at dewyscott21 at yahoo.ca. He will be sure to provide everyone with a phone number that he can be reached at if an umpire does not show, OR of the protocol that we should follow in such a situation.

And finally, if you have any ball related questions, please do not hesitate to contact your exec – that’s what we’re here for.

Memo from the City of Guelph

Subject: Delayed Opening of All City Sports Fields

Due to the recent wet weather over our region, sports fields have been inspected and are not suitable for use, and thus, we are delaying the opening of all sports fields. All fields will remain closed until at least Tuesday May 3rd; at which time the situation will be reassessed and decision notice posted on our website by 2pm on Tuesday, May 3.

This also applies to those fields for which an early opening ie April 30th or May 1st had been granted.

Please remember to refer to the Sports Field status page on the City of Guelph website for the most current update. The Sports Field status page can be accessed at http://www.guelph.ca/living.cfm?itemid=77425&smocid=1627.

Throughout the season, we will be continuing with the practise of closing sports fields when they are deemed unsuitable for use, saturated or during especially wet weather conditions.

  • Staff will make the decision by 2:00pm if fields are to be closed for the duration of the day and evening.
  • Notification of field closures will be posted on the City’s website at Guelph.ca. Look for the “Sportsfield Status” webpage under “Seasonal Information” or use link noted above.
  • The onus is on the user groups to monitor weather conditions and refer to the Sportsfield Status webpage.
  • During off hours, ie weekends, permitted groups are encouraged to exercise due diligence in the event of saturated field conditions, as damaged fields will result in extended closures.

The goal is that this practise will result in higher quality fields and fewer long term closures.

We greatly appreciate your cooperation and assistance in protecting our sports fields.

Thank you,
Kelley

New Meeting

Good day, GTCSPL.

I know we said that there was no need to have a meeting but unfortunately some concerns have arisen and it is imperative that we discuss them as a group.

I am scheduling a meeting for Wednesday, April 6th at 7:00 pm.
Knights of Columbus Hall on Lewis Rd. (same place as all meetings).

Please make sure that you have a team rep present. Any absent reps will not be fined, but you will also not have a voice or a vote.

Thank you,
Bruce
