Overall the tourney was favourable – a little rainstorm on Friday but the rest of the weekend turned out great. Thank you for keeping the park area clean!

Brandi will be putting together a cost analysis to compare this with previous years costs with a beer tent. We will discuss options at a future date.

Congrats to the winners:

A Division

X beat No Pepper 4-3 in the last inning.

A great game after their round robin game ended in the same result earlier in the day.

B Division

Bases Loaded beat Hartec 10-9.

A good run for Hartec, having to play 3 back-to-back games and extra innings in Semi-Finals.

Looks like the new kids (Bases Loaded) are up for the challenge.

C Division

Bulldogs beat Connors 9-2.

The top 2 teams from the round robin – a suitable match up in the final.

D Division

BOHICA beat CAW 21-7.

Another good final with top teams from either pod.

Your prizes will be forwarded to you when they arrive. I have not received them yet so I don’t know what they are.

The closing tourney schedule is in your book and the tourney will be October 1st and 2nd. The numbers represent your final standing in the division, NOT your team number. All teams are EXPECTED to be present or forfeits will be incurred.

Please also take note of the Year end banquet date – we will provide more info as it becomes available. There will be a limited number of seats available for dinner.

*SAVE THE DATE*

GTCSPL BANQUET & AWARDS
Saturday November 6th, 2010
5:00pm – 1:00am
Best Western Royal Brock Hotel and Conference Centre
# of tickets per team & price TBA

Important!

It has also been noticed and brought to my attention that some teams are still using illegal bats. We use the ASA bat policy and it is clearly stated in your Constitution and on the Website. If it is not on the APPROVED list, then you can not use it. No Ultra’s, Blackouts, Jak’d, T22C6, Synergy 2’s etc., etc.

You are putting players at risk and if someone were to be hurt then they would have no insurance coverage.

If you are not sure if a bat is legal, then ask me and I will help you through the process of checking. Umpires have been asked to be more diligent in checking bats and any bats found illegal will result in immediate ejection of the player for that game plus their next game. These ejections will be reported to the UIC and the Executive and will be monitored. Any further instances will result in ejection from the league permanently.

I got this in my Inbox just before Christmas but held off on reporting about it until I had a better understanding of exactly how it would affect us. I’m not really sure I know now what it’s affect will be, but here goes …

Information Bulletin

To: City of Guelph Outdoor Facility Users
From: Murray Cameron– Manager of Parklands and Greenways
Department:	Operations

RE:	2010 Operating Budget

We write to follow up on our information bulletin of November 25, 2009, wherein we advised that Council was considering a number of rate increases in an effort to deal with a difficult budget. We thank those who took the time to appear as a delegation, or to contact the Mayor and Council in this regard.

In preparation for the budget staff restructured our proposed rates and fees, and we are attaching a copy of the new rates and fees with this bulletin. In our view these new rates continue to represent good value and our very competitive with the rates in surrounding communities.

A decrease in the Youth Subsidy from 47.5% to 40% was considered by Council, but was rejected, so approved youth groups will continue to enjoy the youth subsidy throughout 2010.

Please be aware that although these rates come into effect on January 1, 2010, all existing signed contracts will be honoured at the stated rate.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,

Murray Cameron
Manager
Parklands and Greenways
Operations

Also attached to that message was a Fee Schedule that had some rather disconcerting information.

Upon first reading the updated fees, it appeared that we would be hit with a very substantial increase in our diamond costs due to a revision in how they made their calculations. More specifically, in years past we have always received a discounted rate when renting more diamonds – the cost for 1 diamond was about $60, while booking all 4 only came to about $110.

The new way of doing things is to rent each diamond individually and by the hour – with no allowance for a bulk discount.

While the League Executives have yet to get together and analyze the full impact of these changes, subsequent communications back and forth have eased some of our fears and I feel confident we can come out of this without feeling TOO much of an impact. Some changes will need to be made in our approach to diamond usage but, until we’ve had a chance to look at this a little more in-depth, we will continue to plan for the coming season as we have in years past.

More information will be available when we begin the League Meetings.

I trust everyone has had a chance to warm up and dry out (I’m talking about the rain here!) after the weekend! It wasn’t exactly what one would call ideal SloPitch weather, but we did manage to get the games in and bring a close to another successful ball season.

Thank you EVERYONE for helping make the tourney a success!

And the winner is …

A Division

With so many teams so close together in the Final Standings on the season, it comes as no surprise that there were some very tight battles in the preliminary rounds of this division. While X and Deep Cold both remained unbeaten in the early rounds to earn themselves a bye into the Semis, the battle for the Quarter Finals was fierce – there were 3 teams on the one side tied with 2-2 records but only room for 2 to move on.

Jose’s Noodle Factory and Boston Pizza Meat Lovers each survived their Quarter Final match-ups but were unable to overcome the 2 unbeaten teams in their respective Semi-Finals. Deep Cold advanced to face X in the Finals, but proved unable to upset the Season Champs.

Congratulations go out to X on a great finish to what was a great season!

B Division

In a division of 12 teams, it’s not surprising for a team to escape the preliminary rounds with their records intact. For 3 teams to go undefeated IS somewhat of a surprise.

Balls & Dolls and Shoeless Joe’s each translated their positions at the top of the Final Standings into early success in the tournament, earning byes into the Semi Finals. Scared Hitless did battle from the middle of the pack and managed an undefeated preliminary round, then continued their run through the Quarter Finals with a win in a tight game against Bulldogs. They met their match when they came up against Shoeless Joe’s, losing 7-4 in their Semi Finals.

Hackers came from behind in their Quarter Finals match to upset Gremlins (can you call it an upset when teams are so close in the standings?), but they proved unable to match the strength of Balls & Dolls when they met them in the Semis.

This set up a Shoeless Joe’s vs. Balls & Dolls Final, the top 2 teams in the Regular Season battling it out for the title. Balls & Dolls took command of this game and went on to win with a resounding 25-6 victory.

Congratulations to Balls & Dolls on your success this year!

C Division

I’m not sure which was more of a shocker in C Division – that Shockers made it through undefeated in the preliminary round, or that WGIL earned top spot on their side of the pool! Each team earned a bye into the Semi Finals after the schedule was adjusted to account for CAW 1917 not fielding a team.

The Quarter Finals saw division champ Bases Loaded upset by Connors Construction, while Those Guys didn’t show up (literally) against The Roasters. The Shockers continued their tournament run in the Semis with a 16-13 victory over The Roasters, but WGIL’s run came to an end when Connors Construction over-matched them 13-5 on their side.

In the Finals, Connors Construction proved too much for the Shockers team as they went on to a 22-11 victory and the Tournament title.

Congratulations go out to Connors Construction on winning the C Division tournament title!

Banquet Deadline

I hope teams had a chance at the Closing Tournament to discuss and make their plans for the upcoming BALL BANQUET. Final numbers need to be in by FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9th (no exceptions).

It was starting to look like the snow might fly before we got the final games in – and it was a close thing, too!

Final Playoff Champs Crowned:

Barzotti Masters wrapped up the Masters 45 Playoff Finals in decisive fashion with an upset 27-11 victory in game 5 over the Divisional Champion Rangers. This was the last game going for the 2009 season, and the only series to go the distance in the Finals. Rangers took an early 2-0 lead in the series, but Barzotti took control in game 3 and never looked back, winning the final 3 games and the series. Congratulations to both teams on your well fought battle and on your success this season.

Masters Finals:

When last we checked in on Masters, Touch of Grey had taken the early lead in the Playoff Finals with an easy victory in game 1. Domino’s Pizza battled back in game 2, showing the form that allowed them to upset Here 2 There Freight in the Semis and make it into the Finals. But when Touch of Grey took over the lead in the top of the 9th, they couldn’t answer back and ended up down 2 games in the series. Touch of Grey went on to complete the sweep with a decisive game 3 victory. Congratulations, and congratulations to all teams in Masters on a very competitive season.

Don’t Forget Division II:

Pour House and Guelph Brewers were tied 1-1 in this series at the last update, but that was as close as Pour House was able to take it. Guelph Brewers came out strong in game 3 to take the lead, and Pour House seemed to lose some momentum at that point. The Brewers capped their Division Championship season with a Playoff Championship when they took game 4 and won the series 3 games to 1. Congratulations on your success this season, and good luck next year as you move on to Division I.

On the Consolation side, Sweaty Mitts proved too powerful for Swamp Donkeys in their matchup, sending the Donkeys out to pasture (I know … kinda weak). This set up a Sweaty Mitts vs. Long Shots match that had Long Shots at a serious disadvantage in that they had to win twice. Long Shots gave it their best shot (get it?), but ended up on the wrong end of an 11-10 battle. Congratulations go out to Sweaty Mitts for battling through.

Last, but not least:

The Division I Finals have long been in the books, but there was still a battle raging for the Consolation round. Havana Blast had their backs to the wall in this series, needing to win twice against an unbeaten Misfits. They were ultimately overmatched by the hungrier Misfits team – Congratulations on a well fought playoffs!

Season Wrap-up:

We’ve played all the games and moved on to our winter sports (or fall, whatever) but we still have some business to attend to. The prizing is (mostly) in and is being embroidered as we speak, but distributing it could now prove to be an issue since we don’t have a year-end banquet to wrap things up.

For this reason, (and because we need to collect light keys, set up our agenda and take nominations for Executive Positions for the AGM in November) we will be calling a meeting some time in the next couple of weeks. This will be a very simple (and Optional) drop-in type meeting with no set agenda, but it is very important that all keys be returned by the time of the meeting. The City is taking strict control of key distribution (much more so than in the past) and in order for us to collect our deposit we need to get them in before November 1st.

I will post on the site and send out an email detailing when we will be having this meeting and where you can drop off your keys should you not be able to attend. The keys are all numbered and we know who you are – please help us get them in as smoothly and as quickly as possible.

Thank you everyone for helping make this another great year of SloPitch!
