Coyote Sightings at Guelph Lake

At Guelph Lake diamonds over the past few weeks I have witnessed a coyote sighting and also heard them howling. I have asked the City for advice and they referred me to the Humane society.

After speaking with the Humane society, I received the below response.

Thanks so much for your email.

The Guelph Humane Society assists with injured and sick coyotes, but we generally aren’t able to intervene in cases of healthy coyotes. The City of Guelph has a Coyote Reporting site located at where you can report your coyote sighting, which helps us to track coyotes in the City and where individuals/populations are found.

I can certainly understand your concern given the proximity of the coyote to your group. Guelph Lake is a very naturalized area so it is likely not unusual for them to be in the area. I would suggest that you consider sending an email to your participants to alert them of a coyote in this area, so that they are aware and can take precautions. Here is a link from Coyote Watch Canada which offers some information on what you can do if you see a coyote, concerns around children, etc. that may be helpful to share with your group –

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

I would expect a favorable response from them but as you can see, it is kind of an ‘oh well’ attitude. I have reported to the site as to the sightings but I would ask that you pass along the info to your players. Be aware if you have dogs, children etc.

I may be going extreme on the caution side here and it may not be a concern at all, BUT I am being cautious. Send it to your players, talk to your players and fans. Be aware that these animals have moved into the area.

Thank you
